Most Iconic Watches Of All Time And Why?
28 Jul, 20250
Few complications capture the soul of mechanical watchmaking as vividly as the chronograph. Invented in the early 19th century to measure elapsed time with absolute precision, it was once the essential companion of aviators, engineers, and scientists. Long before digital timers, the chronograph served as a vital tool for timing races, recording experiments, and navigating the skies. Over time, it evolved from a purely functional instrument into a cornerstone of horological design, admired for both its complexity and character. Today, nearly every major watchmaker has their own rendition of the chronograph watches, each lending its own aesthetic and technical signature.
The five chronograph watches featured here at Second Movement illustrate that evolution perfectly, representing a cross-section of creativity, engineering, and legacy that continues to define modern watchmaking.

Omega Speedmaster Racing
The Omega Speedmaster Super Racing 329.30.44.51.01.003 captures the pulse of motorsport with a masterful blend of design and innovation. Its 44.25mm stainless steel case houses a striking black honeycomb dial inspired by vintage racing models, while a black ceramic bezel etched with a tachymeter scale in vivid yellow grand feu enamel adds energy and contrast. Subtle details like the striped small seconds at nine and the special “10” in the date window marking ten years since the >15,000 Gauss milestone celebrate its legacy of precision. Powering this dynamic creation is the Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 9920, the first to feature Omega’s groundbreaking Spirate System, which allows ultra-fine rate adjustments for exceptional accuracy. Certified by METAS and engineered for magnetic resistance, it represents the cutting edge of chronograph watches, combining mechanical excellence with a spirit of relentless performance.
Carl F. Bucherer Heritage
Inspired by the vintage charm of mid-century timepieces, the Carl F. Bucherer Heritage Bicompax Annual brings nostalgic styling to the modern wrist. Its black dial with twin chronograph registers and a large date display offers clarity and grace in equal measure. At the heart of this watch is the in-house calibre CFB 1972, a self-winding movement running at 28,800 bph with a 42-hour power reserve. Based on the reliable ETA 2894-2 module, it offers a bi-compax layout alongside annual calendar and big date complications. Measuring 41mm in diameter and 14.15mm in height, this Heritage Bicompax Annual captures the spirit of 1940s design with contemporary craftsmanship, making it one of the most distinctive chronograph watches available today.
Zenith Chronomaster El Primero
Zenith’s El Primero has long been celebrated as the world’s first high-frequency automatic chronograph movement, and this Chronomaster proudly continues that legacy. The Zenith El Primero Stratos Spindrift Racing brings together the brand’s technical mastery and sporting spirit in a bold, performance-driven form. At its heart lies the El Primero 4061 calibre, a high-frequency automatic chronograph beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, offering accuracy to a tenth of a second. The movement features a column wheel along with a silicon lever and escapement for improved durability and precision. The 45mm DLC-coated stainless steel case frames a carbon fibre dial, distinguished by an openworked window at 10 o’clock that reveals the escapement. This Chronomaster brings the El Primero story to life, its exposed mechanics revealing the same spirit of precision and daring that made Zenith a cornerstone of modern chronograph design.
Graham Chronofighter Oversize
Few watches express boldness quite like the Graham Chronofighter Oversize. Its signature trigger mechanism on the left side of the case allows quick operation of the chronograph functions, inspired by World War II bomber timing systems. The oversized 45mm case, combined with a striking steel bezel and leather strap, makes a powerful visual statement. Inside, the automatic calibre G1750 (also known as G1734 in earlier iterations) runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, offering a 48-hour power reserve and supporting both chronograph and small seconds functions. The dial’s layered textures, luminous markers, and aviation-style layout give it a commanding presence. Built for those who appreciate mechanical theatre as much as technical mastery, the Chronofighter Oversize transforms the tool-watch archetype into an expressive, modern icon.
TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph
The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye is a celebration of speed, precision, and motorsport heritage. Limited to 911 pieces, this chronograph pays homage to the legendary Porsche 911 and its triumph at the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally. Its black dial, framed by a polished steel case and steel tachymeter bezel, evokes both speed and style. At its heart beats the in-house calibre TH20-08, featuring a Porsche steering wheel-shaped oscillating mass and delivering an 80-hour power reserve. Its signature mechanism simulates acceleration, with the chronograph hand moving rapidly before decelerating, a poetic nod to a race’s opening burst. With its strong lineage and elegant restraint, the Carrera balances sportiness with luxury, proving why it remains among the most beloved chronograph watches for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
