A Collector’s Delight — Arnold & Son Time Pyramid
READ FULL STORYLouis Erard has created a niche for itself when it comes to innovative watches. Primarily renowned for producing unique watches in collaboration with other masters in the field, the maison has always put out creations worth looking forward to. One of such remarkable timepieces is born out of the maison’s 2021 collaboration with atelier oï, resulting in a deceptively simple piece that is anything but simple if you look closer at the intricate mechanism inside. So, here we explore this collaborative piece, the limited edition Le Régulateur Louis Erard x atelier oï (reference 85237AA53.BVA33). We’ll go through everything about why this collaboration is so special, as well as all the incredible aspects of the timepiece.
About atelier oï
Louis Erard’s decision to collaborate with atelier oï is unique in itself. Not related to watchmaking in any way, atelier oï is a leading Swiss architecture and design studio that was founded back in 1991. With a focus on making every architectural creation in a way that is “harmonic” and resembles “natural unity,” the studio has been pretty innovative in its field under the leadership of its trio of leaders. In retrospect, with close to 30 awards in their bag, there could have been no better partner for Louis Erard, a maison renowned for its out-of-the-box and unique timepieces.
Limited Edition Le Régulateur Louis Erard x atelier oï: Unveiling The Intricacies
Just like a meticulously crafted blueprint, every detail of the Louis Erard x Atelier oï is designed to harmonise perfectly, ensuring the regulator’s hands move with both precision and elegance. Here is a more in-depth analysis of everything that makes the Le Régulateur Louis Erard x atelier oï great.
The Dial
Like any other watch, the dial is the first thing that catches the attention in a Louis Erard watch. But unlike other watches that attract attention with the stunning layout of different complications, the absence of any attracts attention here. Instead, you get a dial that is devoid of any markers or indices. The surface of the Louis Erard x atelier oï features a stunning engraved sunray pattern radiating outward, adding depth and texture to the minimalist design, with the sub-dials positioned at 12 o’clock for hours and six o’clock for seconds.
It is this invisible element that may lead to a few tiny difficulties in using the watch initially. After all, there are no indices, not even the outline of the sub-dial, to tell you where you are supposed to look. But spend a few days with the watch, and you will be able to tell that the sub-dial at 12 o’clock marks the hours, while the one at six o’clock is for the seconds. Additionally, the engraved sunrays on the surface of Louis Erard x atelier oï are divided into 60 equally spaced segments to help you tell how many minutes have passed. And once you get the hang of it, telling the time will be a breeze.
The bright blue baton hands add a pop of colour to contrast the matte and polished grey of the dial and the silver of the case. All combined, the different elements work together excellently.
The Movement
Like any other Louis Erard watches, the mechanism and precision have definitely not been compromised to accommodate the unique visuals. The Louis Erard x atelier oï boasts the Sellita SW266-1 automatic movement to power the simple HMS (hands, minutes, and seconds) functionality displayed on the dial. A classic movement used for simple HMS timepieces, it features a power reserve of around 38 hours to make this a considerably functional timepiece.
The Case and Caseback
The case is constructed out of a stunning polished stainless steel material. The case is 42mm wide, looking stately on the wrist and commanding all the attention it deserves. The robust construction gives it a water resistance of 50m. As for the caseback, it has been designed as a stunning exhibition display. The transparent caseback gives a peek into the Sellita SW266-1 movement. You can see the mechanism running at 28,800vph with its open-worked rotor design.
The Bracelet
Complementing the matte grey effect of the dial is the grey Nubuck calf leather strap that features tone-on-tone stitching. The tone-on-tone stitching allows the strap to act as the ideal supporting actor, subtly blending into the background and letting the dial shine and do all the talking. On top of this, the functional catch spring bars at the lugs allow the strap to be easily changed if you wish to do so. The pin buckle design only adds convenience to make Louis Erard x atelier oï a complete timepiece that is complicated in design yet simple to use.
Final Thoughts
Louis Erard never disappoints with its collaborative pieces, and this is no different. Bringing the signature elements of Louis Erard with the architectural precision of atelier oï with its intricate dial design, this limited edition watch is truly the dream model of a collector. More aligned to those looking for style and design rather than functionality, the Louis Erard x atelier oï is more akin to a piece of art on your wrist rather than a functional time-telling tool. However, even if you are a lover of art and the artistic, with just 178 pieces in circulation, you would be lucky to get your hands on this coveted piece. After all, who would not grab the opportunity to have this stunning masterpiece in their collection?
