Most Iconic Watches Of All Time And Why?
28 Jul, 20250
Launched in 2010, Ressence approaches watchmaking from a designer’s mind rather than traditional watchmaking. The brand was founded by Benoît Mintiens, an industrial designer from Antwerp, who reimagined timepieces as dynamic instruments of interaction rather than static displays of time. Mintiens’ experience in designing aircraft cabins, train interiors and furniture taught him to prioritise comfort, measured proportions and clear function, principles that now guide every curve and contour of a Ressence watch. He aimed to never challenge tradition, but to create watches that feel instinctive and sit as a natural extension of the body.
A New Dimension Of Time: Inside Ressence’s Living Dial
The dial is where Ressence departs most clearly from convention. Instead of traditional hands sweeping across fixed markers, the brand developed the Ressence Orbital Convex System, or ROCS, a mechanical module that replaces the familiar dial layout with a series of rotating discs. Each disc carries separate functions of hours, minutes, and seconds, and all revolve together in a smooth, orbital motion. The entire surface moves as one, so what you see is not a set of independent hands, but a single composition in constant, quiet motion. The dial sits convex and close beneath the crystal, giving it a sense of depth that feels both fluid and precise. You only notice the subtle movement of light across it and how the typography and discs align with a space-grade precision.
Ressence further advanced this concept with the oil-filled display in the TYPE 3 and TYPE 5 models. By filling the upper chamber with oil, internal reflections are eliminated, making the indices appear as if they float directly on the glass. Beneath this seamless view lies a dual-chamber system, where magnetic coupling transmits motion from the dry movement below. Flexible bellows compensate for changes in temperature, ensuring perfect stability. On the wrist, the display feels weightless and vivid, as if time itself were suspended in liquid clarity.
Ressence Type Collections: A New Language Of Time
Each Ressence collection carries forward the same philosophy, but through a slightly different expression of form and interaction.
TYPE 1°
Type 1° expresses the brand’s essential proposition in its purest form, with pebble-like ergonomics and elemental clarity. The model employs ROCS to display hours, minutes, seconds, and days with discs that rotate in harmonious relation. Since its introduction in 2014, it has evolved through subtle updates and varied case shapes, including the TYPE 1 Slim, TYPE 1 Squared, and TYPE 1° Round. Cases are often crafted in grade five titanium, while the recessed caseback winding keeps the profile purified and ambidextrous.
TYPE 1²
Type 1² translates the Type 1° logic into a square case with a round, convex dial nested within it. This architecture emphasises contrasts between soft and geometric forms, creating a robust yet elegant presence on the wrist. The sunscreened discs and strong Super-LumiNova ensure legibility at a glance, and the caseback mechanics preserve a clean flank without a conventional crown.
Type 2
The Type 2 is Ressence’s first production watch to integrate the eCrown, an electro-mechanical module that adds smart functions while leaving the mechanical calibre fully autonomous. Housed in a curved 45mm by 12mm titanium case with anthracite PVD, the dial features light apertures and internal shutters that charge photovoltaic cells to power the eCrown. The eCrown itself adds 87 components and enables a second time zone, automatic time correction after power loss, a mechanical power-saver mode, and time monitoring, all controllable via a companion app.
TYPE 3
The TYPE 3 represents one of Ressence’s most distinctive achievements. It was the brand’s first oil-filled model, designed to improve legibility while creating a smooth, uninterrupted form. The titanium case curves naturally around the wrist and is offered in several variations, including black, white, and eucalyptus, each giving a different character to the clean typography and orbital layout. The dial features a temperature gauge to monitor the oil, best maintained between -5°C and +55°C for optimal performance.
TYPE 5
The TYPE 5 brings the signature fluidity of design from the brand into the field of diving, without compromising its core identity. It uses a Grade five titanium case built to be robust and light, and incorporates an oil-filled dial that eliminates mirror-effect reflection underwater. The display maintains the orbital disc system, with indicators that glide in a unified motion. Water-resistant to 100 metres and tested to the ISO 6425 diving standard, it is engineered for genuine underwater exploration. Notable models include “Night Blue” and “Black Black”, each dial rendered with a distinct mood and visibility.
Type 7
The Type 7 GMT celebrates Ressence’s 15th year with Night Blue and the limited edition Aquamarine edition. Designed as a modern tool watch, it is housed in a 45mm grade five titanium case for strength and lightness, complemented by a deployant clasp with five adjustable positions. The GMT function offers a clear, integrated display of a second time zone, while the oil-filled dial eliminates reflection for perfect legibility.
TYPE 8
Type 8 pares the concept to essentials, showing only hours and minutes through the ROCS arrangement. The 42.9mm grade five titanium case is extremely light. Hidden lugs and sandwich construction create a seamless profile. The Ressence Type 8 has recently expanded its palette to include vibrant, bright pink and striking turquoise variants. Additionally, the brand released a special edition called Type 8 Indigo, featuring a dial crafted from indigo-dyed silk thread and inspired by Japanese craftsmanship in collaboration with Shellman.
Type 9
The Type 9 stands apart through its compact 39mm titanium case shaped with smooth, pebble-like curvature, giving the watch an organic presence that feels refined and modern. Its dial presents only hours and minutes through Ressence’s orbital display system, while the minute scale is engraved directly onto the fixed outer bezel to maintain a clean, open visual field. The ROCS 9 module operates without oil, using jewel ball bearings to ensure long-term precision and fluid rotation. Offered in warm grey or aqua blue, the media-blasted dial texture and Super-Luminova accents provide quiet clarity in all lighting conditions.
Redefining Time
Ressence stands apart as a brand that reimagines what a mechanical watch can be. Every detail, from its oil-filled dials to its orbiting displays, reflects a pursuit of clarity and interaction rather than ornament. Shaped by a design-first philosophy, its watches feel organic on the wrist and instinctive to read. Ressence watches are a glimpse of where modern watchmaking is headed: tactile, intuitive, and designed around how people actually experience time.
