Damascus Steel Meets Modern Mechanics in the Heritage Corum LAB 01

Damascus Steel Meets Modern Mechanics in the Heritage Corum LAB 01

The Heritage Corum LAB 01 Damascus arrives as a study in contradictions, where ancient metallurgy meets a clearly futuristic temperament. Setting a clear foundation for Corum’s experimental vision, it introduced the inventive concept of a “shape movement”, a calibre engineered to conform precisely to its unconventional case. This bold philosophy was carried forward with the LAB 02, which pushed technical audacity even further through the inclusion of a flying tourbillon and an entirely bridge-less gear train. By removing the bridges, Corum LAB 01 achieves the illusion of floating components, amplifying the collection’s sense of visual drama.

Damascus Steel, Reframed

Corum LAB
Corum experimented with Damascus steel in one of its LAB models, layering the metal’s distinctive wave-like patterns with a sleek black DLC coating for a striking fusion of tradition and modernity

Damascus steel carries a lineage that stretches back centuries, prized for its patterned surface and the resilience of its blades. Corum translates this history into horology by producing cases in the alloy and then treating them with a black DLC finish. The process preserves the characteristic undulating design while lending the metal a subdued, modern presence. Each case bears its own distinctive pattern, a fingerprint forged in steel that ensures no two timepieces are ever alike.

The LAB 01’s barrel-shaped case measures roughly 39.89mm, a proportion that reads compact on paper yet authoritative on the wrist. The silhouette favours soft curves and fluid transitions, which contrast elegantly with the Damascus motif. Corum integrates blue rubber inserts along the case flanks, adding visual contrast and ergonomic comfort. The black rubber strap bears Corum’s key emblem, which keeps the overall presentation coherent and quietly branded. Positioned at six o’clock, the crown is finished to complement the rubber accents, enhancing grip while maintaining the dial’s symmetry and ease of use.

Legibility And Light

Despite the open work and dark palette, Corum prioritises clarity through colour and luminous material. The hour and minute hands are filled with Super-LumiNova that matches the blue accents applied to dial elements and rubber inserts. This thoughtful use of blue enhances legibility against the anthracite backdrop, uniting case and strap in visual harmony. The interplay of light on the black DLC Damascus sits between mystery and utility, offering dramatic contrast without sacrificing everyday function.

At its heart lies the calibre CO 410, a curved, barrel-shaped skeleton movement conceived to fit the case. The curved skeleton calibre measures 38.3 by 32mm and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, a steady 4Hz rhythm that balances precision and poise. It comprises 27 jewels and stores a 50-hour power reserve, which balances practical autonomy with refined architecture. The micro-rotor enables efficient automatic winding and remains a kinetic focal point. Visually, it leans toward the avant-garde, a bold expression of modern watchmaking that bridges classic refinement and contemporary design.

Finishing And Craftsmanship

Finishing is where the Heritage Corum LAB 01 earns its claim to horological seriousness. The movement receives Côtes de Genève across visible bridges and carefully executed bevels where geometry permits. The micro-rotor’s spiral effect is polished to catch the eye when it turns, and the exposed components present clean tolerances. The Damascus surface itself receives a restrained blacking treatment that accentuates the pattern. Together, these choices create a watch that reads as thoughtful from a distance and richly detailed up close.

The Heritage Corum LAB 01 Damascus trades in contrasts and executes them with assurance. Limited to just 99 pieces worldwide, it stands as a rare opportunity to claim a creation that few will ever own. For collectors who appreciate material storytelling as much as precision, the LAB 01 is both a conversation piece and a legacy object. And with only a handful available, Second Movement offers the remarkable chance to make one of these extraordinary timepieces yours.

Because this is a very limited edition, key checks include: authenticity of the Damascus steel pattern (each case is unique), matching reference number and edition number (e.g., out of 99 pieces), condition of the skeletonised movement (calibre CO 410), presence of original rubber strap and clasp, and verifying that the black DLC coating shows proper finishing. Also check service history and water resistance, given the 50m rating.

Damascus steel is a layered alloy historically used for making swords and knives, prized for its strength, sharpness, and distinctive wavy patterns. In watches like the Corum LAB 01, this material is recreated using modern metallurgical techniques. Each case displays unique, flowing patterns due to the layering process, so no two watches are identical. Its combination of heritage craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics makes it both visually striking and highly collectible.

The LAB Series and Golden Bridge collections highlight skeletonised or fully visible movements, giving collectors a clear view of the intricate mechanics inside. These watches combine technical mastery with bold design. The Golden Bridge collection is also available to purchase at Second Movement.
