Watch Review: Gerald Charles Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin

The Gerald Charles Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin GC2.0-A-02 is a striking evolution of one of Gerald Genta’s final case designs, balancing avant-garde aesthetics with refined ergonomics. This model distils the essence of the Maestro collection into a slim stainless steel watch, dressed in an emerald green sunburst dial and paired with a high-performance mechanical calibre developed in Switzerland. As an ultra-thin interpretation, it offers remarkable comfort on the wrist while retaining the distinctive asymmetry and aesthetic cues that define the series.

The Maestro Case: Built On Architectural Heritage

The foundation of this watch traces back to 2006, when Gerald Genta unveiled the Maestro case as one of his last design contributions before his passing. Drawing inspiration from Francesco Borromini’s 17th-century Baroque architecture, the case merges geometric forms in unexpected ways, a square octagon with a subtle smile at the six o’clock position. What appears straightforward from a distance reveals itself as remarkably complex up close. Assembled from over 15 components, including a double bezel construction, the watch creates depth and shadow play across the wrist.

At 39mm wide and 41.7mm from lug to lug, the proportions favour modern tastes without veering into oversized territory. The 316L stainless steel is available in both polished and brushed finishes, creating a textural contrast that highlights the interplay between curves and angular transitions. Despite its architectural presence, the slim 8.7mm case height allows the Gerald Charles Maestro 2.0 to slip beneath shirt cuffs with ease.

The emerald green sunburst dial of the Gerald Charles Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin captures light with remarkable precision, revealing subtle tonal shifts as the wrist moves. Applied baton indices are paired with small luminous dots, while the markers at three, six, nine, and twelve o’clock receive Super-LumiNova C7 treatment for clear legibility in low light. A discreet date window at six o’clock maintains the Maestro’s axial symmetry, aligning with the collection’s architectural design codes. The printed white minute track and contrasting black date disc with white numerals add clarity and structure. Refined yet functional, the dial reflects Gerald Charles’ approach to proportion, balance, and timeless simplicity.

Under the exhibition caseback sits the automatic calibre GCA 3002, a collaborative effort with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier and a technical backbone that justifies the Ultra-Thin’s name. At 23mm in diameter and 3.7mm in height, the movement manages a lot in a compact package: a 28,800vph beat rate, double barrels for a 50-hour power reserve, and a hexagonal bidirectional rotor conceived by Octavio Garcia. The bridges feature Côtes de Genève striping, while the main plate gets circular perlage decoration. The rotor itself carries a gold finish with a honeycomb pattern and colimaçon detailing, designed by watch designer Octavio Garcia.

Sporty Yet Refined: The Maestro Strap

Gerald Charles pairs the watch with a vulcanised emerald green HNBR rubber strap that echoes the dial colour. The strap surface features Clous de Paris guilloché on the outer side, while the underside displays the brand’s tapisserie pattern for added visual interest even when worn. A polished steel pin buckle engraved with the Gerald Charles logo provides secure closure. The result is a combination that reads sporty yet considered, providing comfort for extended wear without diluting the watch’s dressier ambitions. The screw-down crown, positioned at three o’clock and finished with Clous de Paris detailing, helps achieve the watch’s 100-metre water resistance rating.

The Gerald Charles Maestro 2.0 At Second Movement

The Gerald Charles Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin distils the collection’s architectural identity into a wearable, refined form. Prioritising elegance and daily comfort over complex mechanics, the GC2.0-A-02 sits alongside sportier pieces like the Sport and 3.0 Chronograph, while offering a more restrained alternative to the 8.0 Squelette and 9.0 Tourbillon. Its Swiss-made movement, developed with Vaucher, features twin barrels and meticulous finishing, confirming the watch as serious horology. Paired with an emerald dial and matching HNBR strap, the Maestro 2.0 combines distinctive design with practical wearability, making it an appealing choice for collectors seeking a sophisticated alternative to conventional round sports watches.

The Maestro 2.0's distinctive asymmetric case was designed by renowned watchmaker Gérald Charles Genta, inspired by 17th-century Baroque architecture.

The case thickness measures 8.7mm, providing a slim profile that enhances comfort and wearability.

The watch is powered by the Swiss-made GCA 3002 automatic movement, developed in collaboration with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier.

Since 2003, Gerald Charles has been owned and managed by the Ziviani family, long-time distributors of Gérald Genta’s creations. Genta remained the brand’s Chief Designer until his passing in 2011, after which Giampaolo Ziviani took on the role of CEO, continuing the maison’s dedication to architectural watch design.
