Prefer Strap Over Bracelet? Learn How To Keep Your Watch Strap In Top Condition

A sparkling collection of high-end watches deserves special treatment. As much as you want to keep it in the optimum condition, you want to sterilise and keep it clean from any gunk or oily deposits. Thus, a standard cleaning method is not applicable for luxury watches, especially the watch strap.

If the watch strap is cleaned regularly, it stays in mint condition. Due to human perspiration around the wrist, the metal bracelet might start to look cloudy and dull. Similarly, the leather straps might lose their lustre and newness from a wrong cleaning process. Hence, cleaning the strap of your favourite timepieces is highly recommended to keep them in top condition.

If you are wondering how frequently you should clean your straps, it depends on how regularly you use them and where you wear them. Suppose you wear a watch every day to fieldwork; you should clean its strap at least once every two weeks. On the other hand, if you rotate multiple watches now and then, you can clean them approximately every three months.

Learn How To Clean A Watch Strap Of Different Materials

Leather Strap

Let’s talk about one of the most versatile types of watch straps. There are several pointers to keep in mind before you prepare to clean your exclusive timepieces. Cleaning leather straps are tricky, as water does not go well with leather. Leather contains oils that keep the strap flexible and durable. Suppose the leather is exposed to excess water; the oils mix with water molecules. And as the leather dries, the oils evaporate along with the water molecules, resulting in the leather losing its integrity and softness.

Step 2: Apply a leather conditioner or cleaner to the strap and massage with a soft cloth piece to remove any stain or dirt. It will also help to soften the leather.

Step 3: Wipe the strap with a clean towel and let the strap dry.

Step 4: Reattach the strap to the dial and enjoy your clean leather strap watch.

NATO Strap: What are NATO straps?

A NATO watch strap is a one-piece strap made from textile materials, usually nylon. It is slid through the spring bars of the case, then into the groove, and then folded back to tighten the grip.  Such synthetic material straps are comparatively easier to clean because water or other liquid conditioners can be used without removing the strap from the case. However, if your watch is not water-resistant, you must remove the strap from the dial.

Rubber Strap

The rubber watch straps are the easiest to clean among all the other types of straps. Rubber or silicone straps are perfect for people on the move, such as sports professionals or individuals indulged in outdoor activities, because rubber naturally repels liquid and dirt. Cleaning rubber or silicone straps must be done, keeping in mind the water resistance capabilities of the watch.
