The Journey So Far Of Louis Erard Watches

An odyssey of over 90 years, independent Swiss watch manufacturer Louis Erard has its roots in the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchâtel, Switzerland. In 1929, Louis Erard, with friend and businessman André Perret, established a watchmaking school and casing company under the corporate name ‘Louis Erard & André Perret.’ However, the duo parted ways in 1931 and later that year, Louis Erard released its first batch of watches.

Once in the commercial arena, it didn’t take long for Louis Erard to earn an international reputation in the watchmaking industry. With international acclaim and demand on their side, the company expanded its workforce, employing over 60 people by 1937. Besides creating its own watches, Louis Erard collaborated with prominent Swiss watch companies to supply them casing for timepieces.  In 1956, the company obtained the exclusive privilege of manufacturing movements, placing itself among the corps d’elite of Swiss horology. The breakthroughs continued, and in the 1980s, Louis Erard added a regulator and power reserve indicator to its iconic Paseux 7001 movement, an exclusive brand achievement to date.

The nineties ushered in a new era for Louis Erard. The ownership of the company changed and the brand relocated to Le Noirmont in 1992. While the region is known for its scenery and watchmaking heritage, Louis Erard remained dormant for a decade. In 2003, private investors acquired Louis Erard and revived the brand with a 21st-century vision. Following the relaunch, Louis Erard produced its 50,000th watch in 2007. In the same year, the brand unveiled Emotion, its first exclusive line of women’s watches. Louis Erard’s 80th anniversary was marked by the release of Excellence in 2011, a collection embodying quintessential Louis Erard elements, notably the iconic regulator display. The company reached its 200,000 watches landmark in 2014 and continues to reinforce its assortment of mechanical timepieces.

Alongside retaining the classical Swiss watchmaking design codes, Louis Erard relentlessly pursues the goal of achieving aesthetic balance in its creations by constantly reinterpreting established standards. From casing up the movement and fine-tuning the dial to perfecting functions, the care and expertise that goes into each Louis Erard timepiece results from fine horological savoir-faire.
