Oppenheimer and Poor Things won Best Films in Drama and Musical/Comedy categories, respectively, and Cillian Murphy and Lily Gladstone won the titles of Best Actors in Films in Drama categories, making the evening a memorable night full of cinematic victories.
Needless to say, our eyes were not just on the stars and their red carpet glamour but also on the wristwatch choices that definitely made a statement. The watch game at the Golden Globes unfolded like a well-scripted drama, with some opting for the familiar elegance of traditional choices while others seized the spotlight with fresh and unexpected selections. So, let’s take a closer look at how timepieces became the unsung heroes of the star-studded night, making waves with both familiar faces and unexpected selections.
Timothée Chalamet
Renowned not only for his acting prowess but also crowned as the most handsome face of 2023, Chalamet’s presence on the red carpet was nothing short of iconic. But while his nomination in the Best Male Actor category for his titular role in Wonka did not earn him the award, he definitely stole the spotlight with his choice of timepiece. Being an ambassador for the brand, it was not a surprise that he donned a Cartier piece – the surprise was that he opted for a vintage Cartier Crash from 2013. The timepiece boasts an 18k white gold rhodium-finished case adorned with 150 brilliant-cut diamonds. The beaded crown added a subtle yet distinctive touch to the look.
Ben Affleck
Representing his directorial work Air, which was nominated in the Best Film – Musical or Comedy category, Ben Affleck was dressed for the part. And putting the finishing touches was the Louis Moinet Memoris Monopusher Chronograph on his wrist. The commanding 46mm dial provided a theatrical glimpse into the intricate mechanism. Additionally, the off-centred timekeeping dial in white further enhanced the watch’s visual appeal, creating a captivating contrast against the intricate details within.
Bradley Cooper
Best Actor nominee Bradley Cooper’s wrist bore the mark of sophistication with the newly redesigned Louis Vuitton Tambour watch, a brand that he is the proud brand ambassador of. Cooper’s choice, the steel Louis Vuitton Tambour Automatic, seamlessly blended style and substance. The watch, with a comfortably bold 40mm presence, made a statement on his wrist. The blue-hued dial added a touch of refinement, creating a harmonious visual interplay with the overall aesthetic.
Simu Liu
One of the most memorable Ken dolls from the 2023 Barbie movie, Simu Liu, channelled his Ken-ergy when he appeared on the red carpet donning the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date. The 42.5mm case of the watch came with a stunning 18k pink gold composition. Liu’s choice featured a rare combination of retrograde day and date display, a nod to the design codes of the ’50s. The sporty sunburst blue dial added a dynamic element, accentuating the overall aesthetic with a hint of playfulness.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez, a nominee for Best Female Actor in a TV Series, graced the red carpet in a striking red Giorgio Armani dress with the exquisite Bulgari Serpenti adorning her wrist. Gomez’s choice of the diamond-encrusted Bulgari Serpenti transformed her wrist into a canvas of opulence. But what made Gomez’s ensemble even more captivating was the meticulous coordination of her accessories. The Bulgari Serpenti timepiece harmoniously matched her necklace, ring, and earrings, all hailing from the same illustrious collection.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph
Who knew that the winner of the Best Supporting Female Actor also had a penchant for fine wristwear? Da’Vine Joy Randolph declared her love for luxury when she stepped onto the red carpet in the 25mm Omega Constellation in full Sedna™ gold. Crafted with the unique “Griffes” design, the timepiece came with a dial that resembles a starry night sky. Also, the diamonds adorned on the bezel and as hour markers further add to the shine of the stunning piece.
Michelle Yeoh
When it comes to women in Hollywood known for their affinity to unique watches, Michelle Yeoh is one name that definitely comes to mind. Having clinched the Best Actress award the previous year for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Yeoh’s presence was eagerly anticipated, and she did not disappoint in more ways than one. A devoted aficionado of Richard Mille timepieces, she arrives at the Golden Globes donning the RM-010. What made the ensemble truly captivating was the strap of the RM-010 that seamlessly matched the stunning strapless orange Bottega Veneta gown she adorned, creating a visual symphony of colour and craftsmanship.
Barry Keoghan
Barry Keoghan made a mark again with his memorable role as Oliver Quick in Saltburn. But even when he made his appearance at the award show as a nominee for Best Male Actor, our eyes were on his 34mm Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra in 18K Sedna™ gold. The timepiece, adorned with a snow-paved dial featuring 498 diamonds, a diamond-set bezel, and indices marked in marquise-cut red rubies, became a visual symphony. It was also incredibly fitting for the occasion.
Cillian Murphy
Right alongside Barbie, Oppenheimer was one of the most acclaimed and memorable movies released in 2023. And Cillian Murphy rightfully took home the Best Male Actor award for his titular role in the film. But just like his quiet yet classy demeanour, he took the same approach for his wristwear for the occasion. The Omega De Ville Tresor he sported is as classy as a watch can get, with a 40mm 18k Sedna™ gold case and a burgundy leather strap. The sleek hands and hour indices on the domed burgundy dial and the sub-dial complemented his simple yet chic look.
Robert Downey Jr.
The accolades of Oppenheimer were truly endless on this star-studded night, with Robert Downey Jr. turning out to be the winner of the Best Supporting Male Actor for his antagonistic character. On the red carpet, the charismatic Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso Chronograph in pink gold caught our attention. A classic timepiece from a classic collection, the pink gold case of the watch radiated warmth and elegance, harmonising seamlessly with Downey Jr.’s charismatic presence. The matching black dial and strap added a touch of contrast, creating a visual symphony that echoed the duality of his award-winning performance.
John Magaro
Getting nominated in five categories, Past Lives was another franchise that showed incredible potential at the Golden Globes 2024. And John Magaro, one of the leading men in the movie, showed up to represent the movie in a classic Bulgari Octo Roma Automatic. The Octo Roma, a masterpiece of horological design, graced Magaro’s wrist with its satin-brushed and polished stainless steel case. The anthracite dial of the Octo Roma added dimension to the elegant design, while the mechanical manufacture movement, with automatic winding, added a touch of horological finesse to the ensemble.
John Krasinski
John Krasinski is a big fan of IWC watches. Hence, for the Golden Globes, he wore the IWC Portugieser Automatic 40. He was accompanied his wife, who received a Best Supporting Female Actor nomination for Oppenheimer. The timepiece, featuring a salmon-coloured dial, became a visual symphony, harmonising seamlessly with his scarlet red satin suit jacket.
