The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992, not as a tool watch in the strictest sense, but as a more luxurious take on Rolex’s maritime heritage. While it retains a clear connection to the water through its design and features, the collection was never meant for deep-sea diving like the Submariner. Instead, it offered something different — a robust, functional watch that could be worn on deck, at a regatta, or to a formal dinner that followed. That subtle shift in intent gave the Yacht-Master its identity, and it remains one of the most distinctive collections in the catalogue of Rolex watches.
Milestones And Evolution
The earliest Yacht-Master, reference 16628, came in full 18K yellow gold with a white dial and 40mm case. This was followed shortly after by midsize and ladies’ models, which marked a rare moment in Rolex history where a new collection launched in multiple sizes almost simultaneously. As the collection evolved, Rolex introduced new sizes and materials to broaden its appeal. The Yacht-Master 37mm and 40mm became mainstays, while the larger 42mm model was introduced later for a more pronounced presence. In 2015, Rolex launched the Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 on an Oysterflex bracelet — a black rubber strap reinforced with a metal blade. This gave the watch a new level of sportiness, balanced by the warmth of the Everose case and the matte Cerachrom bezel insert.
In recent years, the collection has expanded with white gold and titanium references. The Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium is especially notable, as it is one of the lightest professional models Rolex has made to date. With brushed surfaces, a muted tone, and no polish on the case or bracelet, this reference took the collection into a more technical, understated direction. Across all models, functionality remains intact — a bidirectional 60-minute timing bezel, Chromalight lume, and water resistance of 100 metres.
A Note On The Yacht-Master II
While the Yacht-Master collection focused on versatile luxury, Rolex also introduced the Yacht-Master II in 2007 as a separate line with a very different purpose. It featured a regatta countdown timer, specifically developed for professional sailing. Built with a large 44mm case and a bold dial layout, the Yacht-Master II was among the most complex chronographs Rolex had ever made. Though it held a niche appeal, the collection was quietly discontinued in 2024, marking the end of its production after nearly two decades.
What Makes The Yacht-Master Distinctive
The Yacht-Master is not built around extremes. Instead, it balances technical features with elegant proportions. The bezel, a defining element of the design, is crafted in either precious metal or Cerachrom and features raised numerals for tactile grip. It is also bidirectional — unlike the unidirectional bezels found on diving watches — because it’s meant for measuring elapsed time more generally, not for life-critical timing underwater.
The watch is available in a wide variety of materials: Oystersteel, Rolesium, Everose gold, white gold, yellow gold, and RLX titanium. Each model offers its own character, from the luxurious shimmer of Rolesium to the modern stealth of matte titanium. Dials tend to favour legibility over flair — black, blue, slate, and white are common, with lume-filled markers that remain visible in low light. The collection is available on Oyster bracelets, and in some references, the Oysterflex rubber strap, which adds comfort without compromising strength.
Inside, all current Yacht-Master models are powered by Rolex’s in-house calibres from the 32xx family, offering a 70-hour power reserve and Superlative Chronometer certification. These movements ensure reliable timekeeping and smooth operation, whether you’re navigating a regatta or just appreciating the watch’s balance of precision and polish.
Why Buy A Pre-Owned Rolex Yacht-Master Watch For Men
The Yacht-Master stands out for its lower production volumes and broader material palette, making it appealing to collectors looking for something different. Whether it’s a discontinued Rolesium, a mid-size gold version, or the titanium 42mm model, the pre-owned market remains the best place to explore the collection’s full variety. Each piece at Second Movement is thoroughly authenticated, with options suited to both Rolex Yacht-Master watches for men and Rolex Yacht-Master watches for women, ensuring lasting value and peace of mind.
Elegance At Sea Level
The Yacht-Master has never been about shouting for attention. Its strength lies in subtlety — in the way its materials are finished, its functions refined, and its versatility trusted by those who want something less expected from Rolex. It’s a collection that has quietly carved its own path, defined not by extremes, but by the spaces in between. For collectors who appreciate detail over drama, the Yacht-Master continues to hold its own.
