The Jaeger-LeCoultre Guide

Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of the world’s most renowned luxury watch brands headquartered in Le Sentier, Switzerland. Antoine LeCoultre founded this watchmaking atelier in 1833, and it has been an owned subsidiary of luxury conglomerate Richemont since 2000.

Legendary Legacy – History Of The Brand

In 1833, Antoine LeCoultre rebuilt his family-owned barn in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland, into a watchmaking atelier and started creating luxury timepieces of extraordinary accuracy. LeCoultre was fixated on improving the accuracy of the watch calibres as much as possible. So, he started customising all the tools and parts needed to manufacture them in his workshop. In 1844, he invented the Millionomètre, the first instrument that could determine the micron, which helped redefine the precision of timepieces. LeCoultre soon became the first watch manufacturer in Vallée de Joux to have all the watchmaking processes done in-house. This approach allowed the company to produce some of the most accurate timepieces of that era, which subsequently revolutionised the watchmaking industry.

Since its inception, the brand has created a slew of highly desirable timepieces and has several patents and inventions to its name. It owns more than 1300 calibres. In 1888, the house was recognised as the most important company of Canton de Vaud for employing innovative machinery and techniques in its watchmaking process. It was also the biggest employer of both men and women in the region.

In 1903, Parisian watchmaker Edmond Jaeger challenged Swiss watchmakers to produce an ultra-thin calibre. This task was accepted by Jacques LeCoultre (grandson of Antoine LeCoultre), and he made some of the slimmest watches (including the thinnest watch in 1907). It started the historic collaboration between two watchmaking wizards that gave rise to the brand it is today. The partnership between the two ateliers led to a merger, and the brand was renamed Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1937.

What Makes Jaeger-LeCoultre So Famous?

Jaeger-LeCoultre is widely known for its meticulous attention to detail and ultra-accurate movements. A Jaeger-LeCoultre watch epitomises exemplary taste, style, and sophistication. The house has mastered three significant complications:

  • It created a minute repeater, earning the title ‘The Sound Maker’.
  • The creation of the Gyrotourbillon that helps correct positional errors and plays the role of the chronometric amplifier.
  • Addition of the most revolutionary celestial complications, such as moon phase, solar, lunar, and sidereal measures of time on the watch dial.

Even today, this luxury maison employs a complete range of techniques, professions, and innovations to produce some of the most sought-after timepieces. It supplies its ultra-accurate calibres to many other luxury ateliers and is well-renowned for its technical expertise, artistry, and perfection. It was awarded a gold medal in the first world exhibition in London for its accurate calibres and development of innovative pinions and wheels.

Jaeger-LeCoultre offers a vast collection of timepieces ranging from simple to complex and from sports to chic. Moreover, it produces watches that appeal to both men and women. It is also widely known for its high complications, such as tourbillions, minute repeaters, and exceptionally thin watches.

The Reverso

Reverso was first introduced in 1931, primarily designed for the Britishers in India who frequently played polo and often broke the glass of their watch with a polo mallet during a game. To resolve this peculiar problem, Reverso came with a rotating rectangular case that could be flipped while playing, thus protecting the watch. However today, Reverso has magnificently grown out of this chronicle, where its swivelling case serves as more than an instrument for protection. It’s a shining aesthetical and functional element and a powerful ground for Reverso’s ceaseless fame. The collection today includes a litany of modern timepieces for both men and women while preserving the signature elements.
