A Collector’s Delight — Arnold & Son Time Pyramid
READ FULL STORYGuilloché is a word derived from the French word guillochis, which means intricate ornamentation, or guilloche, for a carving tool. It is a complex and stunning pattern executed on a watch dial to enhance its beauty multifold with its presence. This speciality technique elevates watchmaking to an art form and showcases incredible attention to detail.
There is also a lot of work that goes into achieving the level of beauty guilloché watches hold. While there are machines that make the process infinitely easier now, the complex tasks used to be achieved by hand in older times. Needless to say, the dexterity, craftsmanship, and artistic ability needed to engrave guilloché by hand also used to be immense since the design needs to have a very consistent depth and spacing between lines across the entire patterned surface. Today, a special machine called a rose engine or geometric lathes is used to make these stunning and enchanting patterns on guilloché watches.
The complexity and beauty of these micro-designs make it one of the most difficult techniques in watchmaking and decorative arts. When featured on an elegant luxury watch, the intricate guilloché pattern catches the light at different angles and elevates the entire look and feel of the timepiece. And accordingly, they are a delight to own and a feast to the eyes whenever you look at your wrist. That is why we bring to you a list of 10 exquisite guilloché watches with marvellous patterns on their dials. Ranging from the more-used Clous de Paris and Grand Tapisserie patterns to the less common basket weave and flinque patterns, your watch collection will definitely get a visual upgrade with these guilloché watches.
Chopard Happy Diamonds
This gracefully feminine Chopard Happy Diamonds Icon is a beautiful guilloché watch and at its heart lies an exquisite mother-of-pearl dial engraved with a radiant sunray guilloché pattern. The genuine mother-of-pearl base provides an elegant, lustrous background, while the sunburst guilloché emanates a sense of motion and energy. The engraving consists of finely etched grooves in a radial pattern across the dial’s surface. When the light catches these grooves, a dazzling starburst effect occurs right below the iconic five freely moving diamonds along the top of the dial.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The hallmark design element of an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is its textured tapisserie guilloché dial pattern. This decorative technique consists of a distinctive geometric grid motif known as “grande tapisserie,” which has become a signature of the Royal Oak line along with the octagonal bezel. The pattern features uniform rows of raised square ridges, separated by recessed grooves that create depth and shadow play across the dial’s surface. The stainless steel case and integrated bracelet on this Royal Oak seamlessly integrate with the silvered tapisserie dial to create a cohesive and iconic look that Audemars Piguet has become renowned for.
Bovet 19Thirty
From a brand known to create some of the best guilloché watches, this Bovet 19Thirty NTS0055 garners spotlight with its ornate dial featuring two types of intricate guilloché patterns that demonstrate the maison’s generations of decorative engraving expertise. The sub-dials at 12 and six o’clock exhibit a radiant Décor Flamme guilloché consisting of flickering flame-like grooves emanating outwards across the surfaces. This technique leads to these sub-dials appearing a deep blue in certain lights, while at other angles, they illuminate into a vivid turquoise – a custom colour conceived by Bovet’s owner, Mr Pascal Raffy. The turquoise guilloché symbolises wisdom, good fortune and protection, perfectly suited for a timepiece.
Additionally, the decorative complication at nine o’clock features a sunburst guilloché with finely engraved concentric circles for added visual intrigue. The rest of the dial area displays Bovet’s traditional Fleurisanne engraving technique with delicate scrolling floral designs. The contrast created between the multiple guilloché textures and ornate engraving showcases incredible horological craftsmanship and artistic talent in decorating watch dials.
Frederique Constant Maxime
The dial of the Frederique Constant Maxime is a work of art featuring two types of intricate guilloché patterns that capture the eye. The centre of the dial has a sunray pattern emanating from the hands in a radiant, attention-grabbing design. This sunburst effect provides depth and visual interest on the black background. Encircling the sunray engraving on the main dial, as well as on the date sub-dial at six o’clock, is an exquisite Clous de Paris motif. This patterned work contradicts beautifully against the sunray guilloché, adding texture and refinement.
Breguet Classique
The Breguet Classique is an elegant guilloché watch with a rose gold case and silver dial. However, what catches attention at the first look is the detailed basket weave guilloché motif at the centre. This delicate guilloché consists of interwoven stripes reminiscent of a woven basket that has been precisely etched directly into the dial plate on a rose engine. Encircling the inner basket weave pattern, the outer portion of the dial has a subtly textured brushed finish. This radiant concentric brushing provides a nice visual contrast against the almost three-dimensional basket weave guilloché engraving.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface showcases ornamental guilloché patterns on each side of its iconic reversible case. When closed, the front “Recto” side displays a vertically brushed silver-grey outer flange decorated with a Clous de Paris guilloché motif in the centre. Upon flipping the case using Reverso’s signature mechanism, the reverse “Verso” side reveals an equally dramatic black dial in a design exactly the opposite of the Recto – engraved with a Clous de Paris motif throughout the outer flange and a velvety solid design in the centre. This 3D pyramid engraving blankets the entire outer flange of the dial, featuring tiny pyramid shapes that lend mesmerising depth and sparkle under light, contrasting the solid pattern at the centre.
Cartier Ballon Bleu De Cartier
This Cartier Ballon Bleu guilloché watch carries an ornate silvered dial decorated with the maison’s signature wave guilloché engraving. This intricate pattern consists of concentric circular grooves, almost resembling ripples in water, that have been precisely etched into the dial’s surface. This stunning guilloché complements the stainless steel case and the signature blue hands of the maison perfectly, giving the watch an elegant look that radiates understated luxury.
Jacob & Co. Palatial Classic
The Jacob & Co. Palatial Classic seems simple enough, featuring a classic HMS complication and a rose gold case. However, what takes it to the next level, despite the simplicity, is the wave guilloché pattern throughout the dial. This intricate engraving features concentric grooves reminiscent of rippling water. While guilloché patterns often accent small portions of a dial, Jacob & Co. takes a bolder approach by allowing the wave engraving to gracefully extend edge to edge without interruption.
Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin Le Regulateur
We know the stunning guilloché pattern on the dial is probably not the first thing you would notice about the Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin Le Regulateur Time Eater watch. After all, the one-eyed monster with an open mouth is too eye-catching to look at anything else. But once you are done appreciating these incredible elements, you are sure to admire the dynamic sunray wave guilloché that is present throughout the face of the watch. This mesmerising pattern provides a fitting backdrop for the playful monster animation powered by the regulator movement. The wavy guilloché matches the chaotic design of the timepiece, adding visual intrigue befitting the watch’s unconventional avant-garde identity.
Parmigiani Tonda GT
The dial of this guilloché watch, Parmigiani Tonda GT is a stunning showcase of intricate artwork in the form of a Clou Triangulaire or “triangular nailhead” engraving. The centre of the metallic silver base features rows of tiny pyramid shapes that have been meticulously etched to create an eye-catching 3D texture. Encircling the inner Clou Triangulaire guilloché is a ring of ribbed engraving providing a nice textural contrast. Delta-shaped skeleton hands glide smoothly across this decoratively engraved stage.
